Nikolai Gogol (1809–1852) was a Russian playwright, short story writer and novelist. He is famed for his use of the grotesque and surrealism in his works. Gogol also used elements of Ukrainian culture and folklore in his writing – a nod towards his upbringing. His work profoundly influenced Russian literature and is widely read to this day.
