Publisher’s summary
In 1897, Britain responded to the killing of a group of officials by razing an empire to the ground. The men had been travelling to the ancient Kingdom of Benin, in what is now Nigeria, when they were ambushed and killed by local soldiers. Just six weeks later, the British had exacted their revenge, set Benin aflame, exiled the king, and annexed the territory. They also made off with some of Africa’s greatest works of art.
This is the story of the “Benin Bronzes”, their creation, theft, and what should happen to them now. When first exhibited in London, they caused a sensation and helped reshape European attitudes toward Africa, challenging the prevailing view of the continent as “backward” and without culture. But seeing them in the British Museum today is, in the words of one Benin City artist, like “visiting relatives behind bars”. In a time of fevered debate about the legacies of empire, loot, museums, and history, what does the future hold for the Bronzes themselves?

Yer welcome. The British Museum seems exceptionally egregious compared to other museums. Their stolen loot includes Elgin Marbles, Benin Bronzes, Rosetta Stone, Koh-i-Noor (Hope) Diamond, Cullinan diamond, etc. etc. Disowning their awful past means righting these wrongs.

Very gracious tour guide at the BM became slightly exasperated when I broached the issue of the Parthenon Marbles & their return (it was a moral imperative). Spiffingly nice fella, up to that rather fraught moment. Calpurnia thought it was gas.
They had an interesting exhibition at the time which tracked the life cycle of the typical man/woman, via pharmacology.
Thx, noble user.

I know what you mean. It was like entering Alli Baba’s cave for me too. I think the tour guides are told not to breach the repatriation question. I got something like that and some quick blub like “That’s not up to me. Let me show you some other cool things we’ve stolen.”

“It would take an Act of Parliament,” he hurriedly blurted. Fair enough, said I. Meanwhile the big Easter Island head looked on in resigned disappointment.
It’s getting increasingly difficult to justify that kind of very grand larceny.
In the case of the Marbles, there is an argument that they were being destroyed in situ; the Turks used the Parthenon as a gunpowder store, and of course it quite foreseeably blew up. That caused the most damage, I think (destroyed 28 columns, several rooms, & killed about 300 people). They also quarried the place for stone to build mosques (for the Athenians?!).
However, now the Greeks have built a very fine, secure & fitting museum in which to house their national treasures, should they return. It’d be a nice good will gesture for Brexit Britain, to restore some lost dignity, following their rabidly racial referendum. Do it for Athena, blokes!
Love yer uploads, you altruistic ol’ cove.
