Chinook DZ576 crashed 1994 -on the 30th anniversary
The best-selling controversial Phoenix, Policing the Shadows is reprinted, with a new evocative cover and audio version narrated by Ian’s son and widow.

A life full of danger but driven by love and loyalty to family and country. Phoenix is the true story of intrigue, danger and family loyalty centered within the Northern Ireland Troubles.

This is the voice of Detective Superintendent Ian Phoenix and his dedicated journey from paratrooper to police officer.

IRA assassinations, covert police and SAS operations, with Booby trap bombers and snipers making the rules of the era.

Hear how the man responsible for almost wiping out the British cabinet was caught, how a deadly bombing campaign in Britain was frustrated and how the lives of many of those targeted for death by the IRA were saved through secret and often ruthless tactics.

The book exposes the struggle between the Northern Ireland Special Branch and MI5 for control of top-secret information channels.

Phoenix had spent 25 years of his life in an undercover war against some of the most deadly terrorist organisations in the world. A war where heroes have no names and deeds that save hundreds of lives remained unrecorded. Until now.

When the Chinook crashed on the Mull of Kintyre on a summer’s evening in 1994, it claimed the lives of 25 top anti-terrorist officers, among whom was Detective Superintendent Ian Phoenix, from the RUC counter terrorist surveillance unit.

PHOENIX is more than just a story of a shadowy war. It is an intimate portrait of an Irish man and his English wife, Susan, who came to Northern Ireland thinking she would be the wife of an ordinary bobby and instead found herself thrown into the mayhem of the troubles.

Their relationship gives a personal background to the tale of terror and counter-terror where a rap on the door can mean death. It shows how love and real family life can sustain a man during a dangerous career .

The reasons for the crash continue to be ignored and hidden in 2024. The fact that the RAF test pilots in Boscombe Down had reported new software in the Chinook Mk2 to be “positively dangerous” on 30 September 1993 should have been enough to stop the fatal flight 9 months later.

The updated final chapters illustrate dubious Government Ethics both in matters of airworthiness for Military Aircraft and cynical choice of release date to clear pilots 17 years late -for damage limitation purposes. Official papers have been closed for 100 years.

The new audio version narrated by Ian’s son and newly covered book re-launch coincides with the 2024 BBC broadcast - Chinook Delta Zulu 576. Read and watch. YOU decide if there was a COVERUP to this day.
