This is interesting, considering the views that Islam has on the role of women. It is most curious that mention is made of freedom from family and society… but not religion, which in my limited understanding of islamic society is the deciding factor. Prostitution, for instance, is a most serious sin in islam, as it is in judiasm and christinaity. All in all, I wonder how the “islamic mysticism” aspect intersects with the islamic religion itself, which would on the surface seem wholly at odds with the plot as described.

@wolfm106 islam [much like christianity & judaism] has its own vast tradition of mystical & ecstatic practises that for reasons too many to list aren’t well known/discussed in the west [to put it mildly]. same goes for women’s roles. ‘women without…’ is an excellent place to start re: women’s interior lives (-: it speaks volumes that the author was imprisoned for writing something so honest & earnest. you should check out her memoir too
if you’d like to learn more about the history of islamic mysticism from a western academic lens, you should also look into the work of william chittick
